Anyway, I really enjoyed Louise's recent post about the satisfaction you can get out of shopping your closet, re-wearing items, and getting creative with your wardrobe. When I noticed that Louise and I have a cozy sweater in common, I knew it would be a great opportunity to show just how much I can relate to re-wearing items and just how versatile a simple sweater can be. Last week, Louise paired her sweater with a gorgeous blue skirt, and today, I'm sharing with you three totally different ways I've already worn the exact same piece. Sweater season is only just getting started, and this little beauty has already proven its worth. I'm one satisfied closet shopper!

Sometimes I get frustrated with my wardrobe, and I'm pretty sure I'm not alone.

Especially after reading beautiful blogs written by gorgeous, relaxed girls in brand new couture outfits each day. Jealously usually rears it's ugly head right around this time.

I really hate that. And am going to stop it.

I have nothing to feel inadequate about, and neither does anyone else. I'm 25, in school, have a mortgage and have been supporting myself for many years. Not surprisingly, responsibilities usually trump buying the latest trend.

I will probably never know what it's like to own a pair of Christian Louboutons, a Chanel 2.55 purse or a Burberry trench. But that doesn't mean that my chance to be stylish is diminished. On the contrary actually, I feel most true to my style and myself when I haven't got two pennies to rub together and need to get creative.

Thrifting, swapping and re-wearing (to death!) all the items in my closet gives me satisfaction and really helps with that pesky cost-per-wear calculation!

When I bought it I really didn't think I'd wear it too often, but that's the beauty of shopping your wardrobe, it forces you to mix and match and get creative. Sometimes that's where the best outfits come from!

I think I'm going to start defining it as "when you wear something that just happens to be in a colour you're studying at school". Or, I'll just keep it as fate. We'll see.

It was pretty perfect timing to wear this gorgeous skirt during our colour theory classes, never underestimate the power of being a walking visual aid!

And it's just as much fun as it seems to wear it, and surprisingly versatile. Plus it gave me an excuse to wear my coziest new sweater and favourite floppy hat, so it's lived up to all of my high expectations!

So it's finally here, the end of my early twenties.

Gah!

My poor Hundred list- I'm definitely leaving it all to crunch time! Looks like I'll be taking 2015 off and just globe trotting the entire time. Aww shucks, sounds rough, right?

And even though I wore this outfit a full week before my birthday I felt that the sparkle and slight "dance costume" feel of it was appropriate for my birthday post! Unless you really don't give a hoot, your birthday is one of the few times you can get away with wearing sequins before 10 am...

ah, who am I kidding? Sequins are too much fun to be left only for after brunch. Introduce them to your croissants tomorrow!

It's official, Fall has arrived! Jeans are out, coats are on and rain is falling.

Obviously, I'm thrilled!

I haven't had a chance to be outside enjoying it yet (oh hai, 32 hours of homework last weekend!) but getting to wear layers and sip tea while working is not too shabby.

Plus, it feels more weather appropriate to wear these pumps again, the red heel just makes me so happy- and reminds me of being in France last fall, where these beauties came from. I love wearing items that have such strong memories attached to them!

And how cozy are these jeans?

I don't wear jeans too often, mainly because leggings and tights allow for more comfort/impromptu dance moves, but these guys have lycra in them and just hug you.

Parasuco sent them over for me to try out and I have to say, they're pretty awesome! Parasuco is one of those iconic Canadian brands from my childhood (pretty sure everyone in my high school had at least one pair of their jeans!) and they just launched their online shopping site, check it out here.

I'm quite in love with these clothes swaps that we've been having over here in Vancouver. It gives you a chance to try on a style that you'd always admired, but could never justify jumping off the deep end for.

Take this gorgeous velvet blazer. I've always been a sucker for textures, J Crew and classic styles (I don't know why I hadn't leapt before...) so when Cee pulled out this beauty I bounded across the room and happily gave it a new temporary home!

Luckily fall eventually did arrive so I pulled on a few layers, my skinny cafe trousers and wiggled around my apartment like an extra from Mad Men.

Oh, don't even pretend you've never done that!

Looking back at these photos, which were taken a few weeks ago in sunny August, makes me remember being calm and relaxed. Right now I'm doing that sneaky blogging thing (where I'm still in my pj's, hair in a bun and a big cup of coffee glued to my hands) feeling anything but relaxed.

But I do feel excited!

I'm loving my classes (hello, Typography!), Fall has arrived in Vancouver (hello, Pumpkin Spice Latte!), and I have some awesome things happening in these next few days (hello, dance class!). So, while my routine has yet to be sorted out, I'm revelling in this new chapter.

It's always strange returning to the place you grew up. I felt like a tourist in my hometown, and it was only then that I realized how different I am now from the girl who left. Not different in the sense of who I am deep down- don't worry guys, I'll always be a book worm, design obsessed goofball- but more sure of who I am and with a much less bruised heart. (yay!)

And it really was a lovely week back, filled with so many people (and animals!) that I love, river rafting, hiking, dinners, and hanging out on the town's new pedestrian area (aww it was such a BIG deal for the little town).

Fall has decided that it wants to be late to it's own party out here. What a jerk! But as long as school is still a go and pumpkin spice lattes are cropping up on menus, then I really don't mind all that much and will continue to soak up this gorgeous sunshine.

Although, when it's boiling outside and you've switched your wardrobe to layers, sweaters and boots you stand to have some awkward layer-shedding moments! I loved this slouchy lazy day outfit but by the time I got home I was sadly only wearing the dress (luckily I'd snuck in the flip flops that Cougar had sent along with these boots, very smart thinking on their part!)

And now to the star of this outfit, the vintage-style Pillow Boots from Cougar! Seriously, how awesome are these beauties? Practical and pretty... my feet are going to love me when winter sets in!

The Pillow Boot is a Canadian classic that was launched by Cougar in 1976 and has just been relaunched this Fall with these limited edition modern take on the classic. The fact that they're crazy cozy, can battle the Canadian winter and look cute makes them my superheroes, I can't wait to put them to the test when the snow starts to fall. Although, I hope that's not going to be anytime too soon!

September is finally here, which for me means whipping on my nerd glasses and catching the bus to school. Whoa, am I ten years ago?

Then again, my back to school shopping list this year is a whole bunch more stylish than my list circa 2001 (think huge flared jeans, baby tees and a perma-ponytail... yeaaah.) But it's also about a mile longer, and I'm going to have to brush up on my thrift skills to do any damage at all to it.

These items are at the top of the list, all perfectly slouchy and chic with a little bit of fun to keep it interesting!

The bright skinnies, grandpa loafers, silk blouses and touches of gold and leopard are completely transitional for any season, and the Moleskine notebooks are necessary for any hard working collegiate.

Le sigh! Fall is here and I couldn't be happier!

Hola!

I know, it's been forever! And I have no excuse. Lets chalk it up to travelling, soaking up summer, finishing my job and starting a new chapter of my life. Hmm... ok, those sound suspiciously like excuses. Forgive me?

And these photos are hella overdue, but they're too much fun to not share! We're getting quite the awesome little blogging community out here in Van and the other night (okay, almost 2 weeks ago!) we met up at the cute Gastown restaurant Cobre for food, sangria and the requisite fashion talk!

There was the usual suspects of Cara of A Fashion Love Affair, Cee of Coco and Vera, Mina of Faboulista and Alex (our lovely organizer!) from To Vogue or Bust and also a few beautiful new faces like Melissa of Miss Melissa, Jen from Prairie Girl in the City and Lynn of Hearted Girl (who I can't believe I didn't grab a snap of, seriously a huge sweetheart!)

This is the shirt that you got a preview of in the swap photos, the one that I did not think I could pull off as I usually feel overwhelmed in tops that can also be used to steal watermelons. But the beading is beautiful and the fabric is slightly dupioni silk-ish so I had to give it a whirl. Plus, it's a swap item. It's hardly like I'm out of pocket for going out of my comfort zone! So a big thank you to the lovely Mina for sharing this beauty with me!

And what would you know? Throw a skinny belt on it (look! I have a waist!) and some high-waisted wool shorts, along with my favourite glasses, and I felt pretty gamine and, dare I say, French!

What does one wear when it's sweltering hot and they don't have a/c? Since I have a couple neighbours who are a little too close for the answer to be a bathing suit, I threw on the little sundress that I borrowed from the ever-lovely Cara over at A Fashion Love Affair and was very content!

Last weekend was a nice little blur of hikes, reading, wandering the city and cooking tasty foods... basically I'm soaking up my summer freedom as much as I can before drowning in homework, essays and GPA stress come September!

I've been crushing on a tutu skirt since I was 5*, so when Cee brought out this little beauty at the swap I pretty much leapt over the table to grab it. And since it's been in my hands I've found countless loveable outfits to wear it with.

*Seriously. Imagine my 5 year old disappointment when I found out that ballet classes don't automatically mean tutus.

Lovefool- The Cardigans

Dear, I feel we're facing a problem.

This skirt is just too much fun to play dress-up with and yet it is not mine! The lovely Mina of Faboulista lent it to me at the last blogger swap we had. It definitely adds more junk in the trunk which can pose a problem, but it's also crazy soft and slinky and with a fitted top looks quite breezy.

I was originally going to pair it with something sleek, a black cami and a heavy necklace, but when it accidentally slipped next to this floral tank I just went with it. It definitely takes the skirt in a more fun and flirty way, which is the perfect mood for summer!

I'm a planner, a list maker, a play by the rules kind of girl. Spontaneous trips to places I've never been just don't happen for me.

But I also thought I didn't like avocados for the first 20 years of my life, and lately I can't get enough (guac and sangria on a Thursday night? Best. Ever.) So, when a friend called up to see if I wanted to go on a road trip this weekend out to the Okanagan... well, why not?

And wouldn't you know, it was a total blast. Maybe I need to step out of my comfort zones more often!

And there it was, this Pendleton piece of perfection. I cannot wait to style it up for Fall!

Swell Swaps!

How adorable are all of these ladies?
I felt so bad showing up at Cee's little Parisian flat for our second Blogger Swap being such a ball of tiredness. I'd just spent 5 1/2 hours in a hot car driving back from the Okanagan, hence the low key hair and flip flops. But I wasn't about to miss out on this fun and I'm so glad I didn't!

Cee, of Coco & Vera, and her adorable fella are the sweetest couple who graciously hosted the swap again. This time we had Cara of A Fashion Love Affair, Mina of Faboulista and Jen of Her Waise Choice. There was a ton of fashion talk, clothes swapping and blog talks- and again I left feeling so excited and inspired! There's nothing like meeting up with like-minded people who also happen to be crazy nice!

I'm loving the versatility of this lace blouse, paired with cut off shorts it's super casual but with a cute skirt it goes quite high brow!

Do you ever have one of those days where you just feel content?

Let me tell you, this day could've gone mighty sour... too little sleep from the late night before, messy hair and a five hour roadtrip should've made me cranky. Very cranky.

But you know what, coffee is a saviour, braids and dry shampoo work wonders and BC is so jaw-droppingly gorgeous that it's hard to not get excited while driving through it.

So my five hour trip to the Okanagan, to hang with my pops, was a success. The outfit photos I had my dad take on the other hand were not. Poor guy, he really needed a son!

Instead I snapped these photos with a make-shift tripod under the curious eye of the other hotel residents.

Awkward and awesome!

I have big news. Big, scary, keeping-me-up-at-night news. (no! I'm not pregnant!)

I quit my 9-5 office job and am going back to school. That's right, at the ripe young age of 24 I've finally come into my own and figured out what I want to do, and now I just need to do it.

I am so scared.

But also so excited!!

It has just been gorgeous here! Beach bumming and cute little dresses have been necessities, especially when they're as cute as this little one that I borrowed from the lovely Veronika over at Girl & Closet at the last blogger swap.

I love that she last wore it on her blog back in March, when Vancouver was quite a bit colder. She added a lace shirt underneath, tights, flats... and looked utterly adorable! I had fun playing off the flower colours in it and added bright happy heels, poppy lips and (my current staple) wrap and sequin bracelets!

Instagraming A Week

Hey guys!

So there I was two weeks ago, scheduling posts and feeling mighty proud of myself (there may have been some back patting on my part..) Well I had posts lined up until last Monday and figured that I was awesome enough to be able to put together just one more post during the week. Hah. Oh how I lie to myself sometimes!

That makes this is my make-up post! And with E. in town this past week there were tons of opportunities for Instagram photos!

Have you guys found the beauty that is Instagram? I think I may love it more than Nutella. Whoa.

And I definitely used it a lot last week! We hung out at the Aquarium (where we met the most photogenic dolphin ever!), indulged in lattes and scrumptious chocolates from Coco Nymph, plus so much Pinkberry and beach bumming!

Oh, hello you!

I was thinking of titling this post "Walking in the Sun" as that was the song I was actually listening to. But that's just cruel. Apparently it's summer, and these photos were taken in mid July, but let me assure you that the long skirt and sweater were needed. Oh yes, an umbrella was too.

Still, walking around my local farmer's market and watching the sun set while sitting on the beach (even if cocoa and blankets are needed) is a bliss that I'm not ready to give up.

This was what I wore last Saturday evening, simple and breezy- one of those outfits that just kind of fell together and made me feel a little silly for not thinking of it earlier!

The glasses were an inspiration from the library card I had just gotten that morning (Yay!!), when I got back to the apartment with an over flowing arm full of books I felt quite the nerd. Which, is pretty true to form so I celebrated with these beauties and some sangria. Ole!

I felt a little like Sandy at the end of Grease in this outfit... I swear, these jeans are painted on! I had to do a major grocery haul on the weekend and (as I have no will power when it comes to Joe) of course I stopped by the fashion isles and came across the most cheerful pants I've ever seen. Bright tomato red and skin tight.

Actually, I didn't realize they would be so skintight until I got home and had to lie on the bed to do them up. Hmm... maybe cheerful isn't the best adjective after all.

I wanted to wear a simple and comfy outfit for a day of clothes swapping, with some of my favourite Vancouver bloggers, and decided on my softest tee paired with my softest pants. Softness is what weekends are for, right?

Not feeling happy being too comfy though, I just kept piling on the accessories. A bracelet here, ring there...suddenly every appendage was fancied up! Apparently, accessories are the key to happiness.

I'm quite the book worm, happily spending many evenings curled up working my way through a good thick novel. This has led to a decent comprehension of words... but has not improved my pronunciation in the least! Seriously.

One word that has been cropping up for years in various books is insouciance; and while I figured out what it meant I've never used it... if I were to take a stab at it last week I probably would've said ins-ooce-eance. Not pretty, people. But thankfully there's a handy thing called the internet which set me straight. And insouciance sums up very nicely what I need to feel right now, last week drained me emotionally, plus it's summer and if ever there was a time to be carefree and light-hearted it's now!

Can I let you in on a secret? I feel like a total ballerina in these heels (which is what I strive for each day, obvs) so I've been living in them as of late, they're also comfier than pointe shoes. win-win!

And when all you feel like doing is air drying your hair, living in your comfiest denim and recuperating from an exhausting week it's nice to know you can still put up the pre tense that you've tried.

Oh man guys, a week? Really?? My mind has been in a million places lately and I completely forgot to update!

So here I am trying to make it up to you by wearing the sweetest outfit I could think of- a high bun, and a double shot of pink on top. It could only be sweeter if I was wearing my tutu skirt as well, but I really don't think I'd go outside in that outfit...

I don't normally go for colours so bright, I usually find that they completely overpower my colouring, but I feel like stepping outside of my comfort zones. And after seeing neons on so many other people I bit the bullet when I found this pretty little shirt on the sale rack and in my size (kismet!)

Guess who found a haaat?! (please sing that, as I just did) It's not the right hat, but it's a right now hat. My real lover hat is roughly this shape and style but a taupy brown colour. Oh, and it would actually fit my head. This one just cuts off circulation and makes a delightful red band around my head that doesn't go away.

Awkwaaaard.

But it's cute and it was only $2 at the local thrift store, so it will tide me over till I can find my true love.

Have you guys heard this song? It's the most happy-go-lucky summer song I've heard this year- I get this ridiculous goofy smile on my face and start wiggling every time I hear it... this doesn't look street cool, but it's fun! Plus, this song has THE BEST language. I quote: "They're only a couple of crazy cougars". Oh my, this needs to be added to my lexicon, now!

I was having a blast bringing out all the clothes that I hadn't seen in half a year and came across this tank that I bought when I was 18 and went to Europe by myself, needless to say it brings back so many happy memories. And these neon flats? I've had them for 5 years, only worn them 3 times (super uncomfortable), but still don't feel guilty because they were $3. That's $1/wear, less than a coffee... it's all in the justifications.

DIY Time! Fancy Friendship

I think I've become obsessed with making stuff. It's the most rewarding feeling to look at something you've created, especially if you actually like it, and know that you put it together. It might be something small like braiding thread around a chain, or something big like assembling a bookcase and not crying//punching a hole in the wall in the process. Either way- Awesome.

So when I saw this DIY Tutorial from Honestly...WTF I knew I had to try it. The embroidery thread was the easy part to track down, the chain link bracelet- not so much, apparently mainstream finds them "gaudy" (which I did too, up until I wanted one for this DIY). I ended up finding a chainlink necklace in Ardene's, keeping it classy naturally, and decided the bracelet would become a wrap one (with a tail).

Now, I'm no teacher, and since I would just be butchering the clear and easy-to-follow instructions that Lauren and Erica put together I'm just going to direct you over there if you want to see how I did this. It really wasn't hard, a little more tricky than the hex nut bracelet, but I finished mine in about an hour and it would've been less had I been able to find an actual chain link bracelet.

I'm quite happy with it, the perfect pop of cheerful colour to add to basic outfits, plus it doubles as a friendship bracelet for classy adults. Guess what my besties are getting in their stockings this year! ;)

Anyway, I wasn't able to snoop through her packing because she lives some 2500 kms away, but I decided to put together a post of what I would pack should I ever get up the courage to finish my Hundred Bucket list. And, obviously, I am an awesomely practical packer- the four inch Zara heels just scream "serious hiker" :)

The bright colours, prints and beading are so perfect for this summer, even if I spend it in the decidedly less exotic Vancouver, especially when paired with the rugged more utilitarian pieces. It's that lovely juxtaposition of looks that just seems to work seamlessly.

Apartment- Young The Giant

Hej!

For those of you not living in your local Ikea store's, that means Hi in Sweden. Aren't you glad I learnt something while stocking up the new apartment? Apparently I have mad skills- I assembled the bookcase behind me and learned a new language, sure... it's only one word, but if I ever go to Sweden I'll at least be friendly!

Also, I'm still crushing on long skirts, especially when they're my mum's from 30+ years ago. Since moving to Vancouver I'd been living out of a suitcase, hunting down a place that suited me enough to call home. Well I finally found a new little apartment that suits me quite nicely and my parent's were sweet enough to drive out my furniture. I've spent the past week moving, unpacking and having it feel like Christmas when stumbling on forgotten treasures. Such as this skirt. My mum wore it when she was my age and was a tanned, beach goddess... sadly I'm quite a few shades lighter than her, but the skirt still makes me feel all '70's and beachy.

Since moving out west, one of the things I’ve missed most has been the blogger/fashion meet-ups I used to have with my lovely friends Brooke and Monique. It was always so refreshing and inspiring to chat with fellow bloggers who get how much time and dedication goes into our “hobbies”. Plus, it didn't hurt that we usually had a good glass of wine and awesome food to keep us company!

So imagine my delight in finding an even larger group of fashion bloggers out here in Vancouver. Each one with their own voice, style and lovely little quirks! We met up for a picnic in Stanley park last Sunday, during one of Vancouver’s first sunny days, and spent many hours chatting, eating and basically all getting girl-crushes on each other!

Guys, I'm starting to lose it. I've been without internet at home for 4 days... I'm driving my local Starbucks crazy and I'm pretty sure my colleagues are tired of my complaining. I'm so out of sorts that I don't even feel like taking outfit shots. I KNOW. We've reached rock bottom.

Ok, there might be a bit of sarcasm in that. It's really not that bad, just a bit of an adjustment. I'm still pretty sure I'm driving my colleagues crazy... but for totally unrelated issues. :)

Currently in a technological haze. Between switching to a new (and so awesome that I want to hug it forever) phone and spending 5 hrs at the Apple store on the holiday Monday, hoping and praying that my poor computer would wake up from it's coma, I just can't face wrestling with a tripod.

The High Road- Broken Bells

Anyone who follows me on Twitter knows that I've been on a bit of a mad hunt for a felt panama hat (like this beauty, in brown naturally) this season... and I'm not really having much luck finding one in my price range. But, as a silver lining, the hunt led me to a very quirky little consignment shop in downtown Vancouver where I happened upon this very proper mid-length skirt. The olive colour is so demure but then it just has this fierce cobalt colour block at the bottom. Ah!

So, my hunt for the hat will continue, but at least I will have a pretty skirt to wear while doing it!

Are you guys sick of inside outfit shots? 'Cause I definitely am! But Vancouver has decided that it prefers rain to sunshine right about now, and I prefer a working camera to a broken one; so I hope we'll both stay put until the weekend when there will be both sun and time. Yay!

But I'm glad I finally get to post this outfit as it's what I have been truly living in for the past few days. Well, besides when I'm at work and have to look somewhat corporate. But we all know how much I love stripes, braids and wood platforms (see multiple previous posts)... so this is pretty much a no-brainer Louise look.

Wow. Do you guys see how dark my hair actually is??

I was going to talk all about colour blocking, carrot pants, spring trends... you know, stuff that would make sense on a fashion blog. But as I'm looking at these photos, all I can think is Damn. My natural colour is daaaark!

I haven't dyed my hair in about 9 months (hence the lighter ends) as I'm really trying to embrace my God given colour. I'm also trying on a bunch of different hairstyles, so today I was bored and decided to try my part on the other side, you know, really mix things up and get crazy! Because I have some mad cow-licks it's a bit harder than it should be... and required many (many!) bobby pins! And looking at these dark brown roots I really don't think this hair has ever seen the sun. Darn cow-licks!

There's no way a person can be unhappy while wearing such a bright mash-up... and after last week's less than stellar events I'm pretty determined to turn my luck around!

Does anyone else feel that this week has been kinda crazy historical?? Elections, a fairy tale wedding, Osama Bin Laden and a (very important!) letter of decision that I've been waiting on. Crazy stuff for one 4 day stretch!

And I really wanted to write a post for the Royal Wedding; after avoiding the hype for so long, my mum and some friends finally cracked me and I became quite obsessed. Quickly. We're talking a 2:50am wake up call to watch it. Shhh! But instead I had a really relaxing weekend with my lovely sister and now it's kinda late (and very redundant!) to recap all the details. Just know that the little Brit in me LOVED it and had big warm fuzzy feelings all Friday, especially when thinking of the Grace Kelly-esque dress. Le sigh!

I'm also unveiling the pretty pretty necklace I won from Molly at Miss Influenced, did I mention that it's pretty? Because it is. And it also makes simple outfits look like I actually tried- and I LOVE that.

I have a confession guys- I am incredibly introverted and awkward. Taking photos in front of people scares the bejeezus out of me- I immediately clam up and can only remember how to make ridiculous faces (yes, they get more ridiculous!). I've known this fact for years: My mum informed me when I was 10 that I was not at all photogenic, and could not in fact sing. Gee, thanks mother. But surprisingly, my mum is so sweet that these facts actually came out as compliments... I still don't understand how...
Anyways, that brings me to this hidden little place that I found to take these photos. I decided to veer off the usual path while at the canyon and came across a sunlit little patch of hidden glory! Imagine my delight that I could take my photos once again in solitude!

DIY Time!

So. If you have the above materials what can you do with them? Possibly something really handy and helpful... or you can make a killer bracelet!

I stumbled on Honestly WTF the other day and have fallen hard for their DIYs, there's tie-dying, rope necklaces, pom-poms and this hex nut bracelet. The tutorial specified brass hex nuts, which look amazing, but my local hardware store only had silver, and after assembling I decided that next time I'll also go for the nuts that are a size smaller to keep it looking neater. It was really simple to make and I haven't taken it off since though, so I think it was a success!

The full tutorial is here, but really it's just braiding and then adding the hex nuts one at a time.. easy peasy!

So we're carrying on the shorts and tights theme, so original. But it works! Warm enough for the cool Spring breeze, but not as uncomfortable and constraining as pants. Although, I did over-layer the top half of the outfit- a tee, sweater and jean jacket was major overkill for the lovely warm day we had.

I haven't had a chance to take any outfit photos this week. I know. What's up!? These ones are from last month but somehow they had become buried in my iPhoto folder, thankfully I stumbled on them today! I somehow don't think photos of my day would be too interesting (meetings, commuting and a bag lunch... oh so glam!)

We're back to my go to in-between season outfit of shorts and tights, but this time I added in a touch of lace via my pretty little dress (folded, very strategically, into the shorts!). With the slouchy boots and drapey sweater I felt pretty cozy, but not sloppy, and that's the kind of balance I like to strike!

Oh, Hello Sunday!

This past Sunday was quite beautiful, so I'm kidnapping you guys and taking you along with me in my photo diary!

After church I slipped into my comfy sneakers and headed down to my most favourite bridge ever, the Lion's Gate. It's this huge emerald green romantic beauty of a bridge. At night it's all beautifully lit up and I can't help but feel that I need to shoot a movie on it (... it also makes me forget that I have no idea how to make a movie!)

Uhm... did I mention that it has huge stone lions at the foot of it?? For a girl who's missing her cat, this is quite a welcome sight!

It led me right into Stanley Park so I roamed around in the sunshine... jealous yet??

Whew! Some how it's only Wednesday. I'm not quite sure how this is possible as it feels like I should be having a long stretch of a weekend coming up right about now... but I've double checked my calendar all day, and I'm 80% sure it's not lying! But it has been a good Wednesday regardless, I've found some awesome new roommates and have a very promising lead on a house! You have no idea how much I've been stressing over the living situation recently (the looming deadline wasn't helping!) so I'm feeling much lighter today.

So with that slightly more sorted, I went for a little walk and photo shoot at the canyon after work today, playing hide and go seek with all the good people who were out jogging and not being narcissistic!

So, would you like to know how I ended up with yet another dress?? You do!? Awesome.

This past weekend was a friend's wedding in Calgary, and since I'm an idiot I decided to drive the 12hr there and then 12hrs back in 3 days. I grabbed some audiobooks, snacks, coffee and my game face, everything but a dress. Now, I didn't forget a dress but remember when I moved from MB to BC? Yeah... it seems that all of my dresses got tucked away into a neat little box that is in storage thousands of miles away from me (see: idiot). I thought I'd be fine, Calgary has tons of stores! I figured I'd drive all day Friday, get up early on Saturday and find a pretty little number in the morning with plenty of time to relax before the ceremony. INSTEAD I drove 9 hrs only to find out that the highway was closed and I was stranded in the middle of nowhere for the night.

When I finally rolled into Calgary the next day I was seriously running late. I dashed into the first store I found and managed to pick up this little number for 30% off! That's right. I just might have to upgrade myself from idiot!

Fall is most definitely my favourite season, but there's always something so gorgeously fresh about spring. It's full of life and colour, flowers and sheerness- well, this spring will be for me anyways!

I've been quite smitten with the following photos for a while now, and fully intend to bring them into my life any ways I can. I may not have a trip to France planned again anytime soon (Le Poo.) but there's no reason I can't dress like I live in Paris!

Loving this sheer shirtdress (especially with the many braided belts!) the more I look at it, the more I want it.

Confetti System's cool designs seem to be following me around the internet, and I can't complain! I desperately want to recreate this beauty in my (soon to be found) new apartment. But for now I will settle with just using this photo as inspiration for the new header I did the other day!

Oh J. Crew, can you do any wrong? This vibrant little skirt (that I found on super super sale at the J. Crew Outlet!) makes me smile, I mean... just look how cheery it is. Obviously an instant smile.

I was hell bent on not wearing tights today. I love them, but I just couldn't pull them on for the 7th time this week. So even though it was a tad chilly outside, I bared my pale legs and threw a chunky, cozy sweater on instead... then spent the entire time with chattering teeth and a desire for a large cup of hot tea. I was still smiling though!

I have to say, I feel bad @$$ in this. Rarr. A friend and I used to joke that I had an alter ego because I'm usually such a little wholesome granny- with all my knitting and baking and crafts (and cat!)- but every once in a while I like being a little darker (k, full disclosure: bad to me means... not taking off mascara before bed! gasp! And learning to drive a motorcycle! No rule breaking for this granny). I don't think I'll ever fully embrace my inner (mini) wild child, but its fun to wear an outfit that lets me pretend!

Inspiration to Outfit

I've loved this Picasso sketch since I first saw it (a copy has been hanging on various walls in the houses that I've lived in for years) but it wasn't until I looked at it closer that I realized what a good outfit inspiration it would make. Just perfect for spring's soft, romantic and slightly bohemian feel. This woman is exotic and sensual, but sweet and natural all at the same time- the perfect balance!

Plus, when I was in Aritzia last week I came across the kimono featured and fell in lust... however, a recent car maintenance bill of $1500 has put a cap on any future spending (and any sanity I had)! So I've resigned to just including it in capsules!

My hunt is finally over! Ever since August I've been lusting after the perfect pair of high waisted khakis that have a "carrot" top for two reasons 1) because c'mon, any pair of pants that you can relate to a vegetable is pretty awesome (!) and 2) when I was in Bordeaux in Nov all the most stylish french girls were wearing them and it just seemed so... effortlessly chic. But every pair I tried on (in excess of 25!) looked horrible! Too tight at the calves, M.C. Hammer-ish, way too baggy in all the wrong places. This girl was just about to wave her white flag and give up, figuring that I just wasn't made for them. But then I stumbled on these beauties and figured I might as well just try on one more pair. Then it was over for me. The search had ended!

Such a lazy, cozy Sunday- exactly what I needed. I headed down to Seattle for the day on Saturday (just because I could!) and didn't get home till late, so getting the chance to laze around for most of the day today was delightful!

It was an absolutely gorgeous weekend, very unlike all the February's that I'm used to! A light blazer and scarf were all that were needed for roaming around outside by the ocean. The sun made my eyes stream while getting photos, but I wouldn't trade it for anything!

Inspiration to Outfit

I tend to keep a large (large!) file of random inspiration photos, most of the time these are outfits I like, but I've also been known to throw just about anything pretty in there as well. I like to think that inspiration can come from anything, and it makes my style more creative and personal to come up with an outfit from a more abstract inspiration photo, than a direct copy of a fashionable outfit (though, I do that as well!).

When I saw the hair at the Rodarte show I audibly gasped. So pretty! The fishtail and messy beauty of it made me think of a very stylish nomad, exactly what I feel like being this spring! Travelling the world and picking up beautifully eclectic items to create my own gorgeous vibe. mmm bliss!

Young Blood- The Naked and Famous

I rushed home from work yesterday to get some shots while there was still a tiny chance of sunlight... well the sunlight was there, but apparently not quite enough. Still, the photos are outside and the scenery is not a beige wall. Lets call this one a success, I'll just say I'm dark and brooding!

Just a simple work outfit with some pretty spring colours, this cardigan reminds me of ice cream... I really don't know why! But every time I wear it I have a mad craving for the stuff.

Oh! Speaking of yummy food, I thought I'd share Whole Living with you guys. I found it the other day and fell in love. Being a fairly new vegetarian (a few months), I've been having trouble finding tasty, easy and healthy food and then stumbled on this magazine while in line at the grocery store (I'm such a sucker for the magazine rack!). It's totally inspired my cooking and it has some great yoga stuff too. I'll be all fit in no time! Well... just as soon as I put down this bowl of cherry garcia ice cream ;)

A week in Photos

I really need to find a good spot (and some sunlight!) for outfit photos! I just can't bring myself to post another set of boring beige walls. The scenery around here is gorgeous, but I leave for work when its dark and come home just in time for the sunset. Hmph. I might have to get creative with the coffee breaks and my trusty old tripod (Here's a free work tip guys: When it's your first week at a new job daily self-portraits are a great way to win friends and influence colleagues!!)**

In the meantime I thought I'd share five snaps from my week.

Phew! All settled in and cozy again, just a few provinces further west. So the posts will be resuming and hopefully I'll be able to be a whole lot nicer with reply's... it's amazing what having some extra time on your hands can let you do!

And now I just have to say... Vancouver is gorgeous! I'm so so happy I made this long awaited move. For the past few days, while waiting for my internet to be hooked up, I've been exploring the city, well... as much as my annoying cold will allow me. But between the ocean, mountains and culture... I'm completely smitten.

Hey Guys!

I'm currently midway into my trek out west and unable to post any exciting fashion photos (spending 24+ hours in a car in a Canadian winter doesn't lend itself well to cutting edge style!).

BUT I did get some exciting news- Fashionism.ca's Christopher Turner (aka The Fashionist) featured my Fashion Mad Lib today. It's bright and colourful and was tons of fun to fill out!

I still can't quite describe how thrilled I was to find out that Fashionism had selected my blog as one of the top 15 in Canada, and I just want to say a huge HUGE thank you to them and to each and every one of you guys for all the love and support. It means the world to me!

The other night I met up with my lovely fashionable friend Brooke (of Center Sage) for some farewell wine. Putting together an outfit when your place is a disaster and you have no idea where most of your clothes are is...fun? Basically, I'd been wearing an oversized white tee and leggings all day but figured I should step it up a bit- so on came the sequinned dress! Nothing says "I swear I'm not a slob!" quite like
sequins.

On a side nore, Brooke entered Refinery 29 and Covergirl's Hunt for the Next Big Style Blogger and really, this girl should win... so head over and give her some love!

So, a few weeks ago I had mentioned that I was working on a project and was hoping to show you guys a bit... so here we go! I debated posting this, as it's not at all fashion related, but in the end decided that it is a large part of who I am and this blog does seem to focus a lot on me (haha).

Here's a page from the children's book I've been working on. It's about Mati, a Red Panda, who is looking for a friend! I had so much fun illustrating it- but had Brooke help out with the writing (the girl has mad skills! Plus, my over-usage of exclamation points and made up words didn't really cut it!)

Hah, sorry but it had to be said! I know I'm being all kinds of flaky but I will redeem myself and in the mean time you guys are given free reign to say "Geeze Louise" as much as you'd like (try it, people seem to loooove saying it to me). Bodkin- Clothes Lust

One of my goals for 2011 is to try and be more environmentally, ethically and socially conscious (eep!). When I decided this I had visions of wearing burlap sacks in an attempt to not support mass produced clothes. Apparently this is no longer the case (yay!).

I know, I've been desperately absent the past little while! But I do have a valid reason...of sorts. In a month I'm packing up my life and moving out the the West Coast!! I've been wanting to move for a while now and I figured it was time to put my money where my mouth is. It will be sad to leave Manitoba, it really is such a lovely place... despite what many say, but it's time to have a bit of a change in scenery.

With all the things I have to complete before moving (rent out my lovely little house, find a job, oh and finish my portfolio for art school.... yikes!) Fifth Sparrow has taken a bit of a back seat- which hurts my heart! So, please, bear with me being a bad blogger for the next few weeks, I will be back in full swing soon enough!

Ah... I think my brain is still in holiday mode. Plus I've been working on a project (that's incredibly time consuming, but I'm hoping to be able to share with you guys next week!) so I really don't know what else to say! It's snowy and cold, so layers are a must, as is this faux fur. Even if it's completely repetitive!

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas, mine was completely lovely; filled with lots of family and laughter and some very tone-deaf singing (oh Rockband!)
