All I Need

Sometimes I get frustrated with my wardrobe, and I'm pretty sure I'm not alone.
Especially after reading beautiful blogs written by gorgeous, relaxed girls in brand new couture outfits each day. Jealously usually rears it's ugly head right around this time.
I really hate that. And am going to stop it.
I have nothing to feel inadequate about, and neither does anyone else. I'm 25, in school, have a mortgage and have been supporting myself for many years. Not surprisingly, responsibilities usually trump buying the latest trend.
I will probably never know what it's like to own a pair of Christian Louboutons, a Chanel 2.55 purse or a Burberry trench. But that doesn't mean that my chance to be stylish is diminished. On the contrary actually, I feel most true to my style and myself when I haven't got two pennies to rub together and need to get creative.
Thrifting, swapping and re-wearing (to death!) all the items in my closet gives me satisfaction and really helps with that pesky cost-per-wear calculation!

Grey Long Skirt- Wilfred via Aritzia (similar), Black Silk Blouse- Joe Fresh (similar), Black Patent Flats- Anne Taylor via Value Village (similar), Wrap Bracelet- Club Monaco
And to drive home this point even more, here's one of my favourite skirts. It was only $30 and, including these 4 above outfits, I've gotten it's cost back ten-fold. When I bought it I really didn't think I'd wear it too often, but that's the beauty of shopping your wardrobe, it forces you to mix and match and get creative. Sometimes that's where the best outfits come from!
Can anyone else relate?

  1. I love each & every way you've worn this dress! They're all so different & so cute!!

And I totally know what you mean....Everytime I check out what all you ladies are wearing here on blogger, I get the itch to go shopping! Alas, most days I'm forced to remix.

You are absolutely right! I can totally relate to you and that is exactly why I love your blog so much. It's easy to look fashionable when you can spend whatever you want- that doesn't impress me. It's re-wearing what you already have and shopping on a dime that makes it interesting and fun!

  4. What an empowering post! Your sense of style is always so lovely. Don't ever forget how good you feel in a look that required creativity. And I agree, some of the most "me" outfits I've worn were thrifted and remixed to death.

  5. I love how beautifully this skirt suits you and how you've made it into such a staple. It's beautiful with this look...wish I had more of your body type and then I'd be able to pull it off! Hope you're having a good weekend so far my love, happy early Thanksgiving!

  7. Such a great post!
I think this is something I often struggle with...I desire to be "fabulous like THOSE girls"...but really I'm only seeing the edited version of their life...and I guess people are only seeing my edited version as well...but it's sooo easy to look at the "cool girls" and wish I had their clothes...their hair...their lifestyle...but I also don't know what goes along with it...probably not an amazing husband, and daughter that I have. And whose to say that there isn't someone looking at our life/blog wishing they had our life (or our closet!)
Basically I think you are fantastic...and I love seeing clothing and outfits that I can relate to!

I can definetly relate...and I actually prefer to read blogs I can relate to and see how you can wear the same item, rather then blogs which will just make me feel jealous and poor, I think they seem more real xxx

  9. Hi, i can't believe that you're 25 with a mortgage. That is really impressive. But I just wanted to say that I do relate, I've almost deleted my blog (last week actually) because I didn't think that it was good enough. but I love your blog, you're cute, you're expressive with your clothing and you're very postiive. Don't let 'those bloggers' (and we all know who they are) get you down, 'kay? Love the way that you rocked the skirt 4 ways- see, you are awesome!

  10. I think this skirt looks absolutely beautiful every time you wear it. But then again, that's probably because it isn't hanging in my own closet every day... I know exactly how you feel; sometimes the clothes in my closet seem to be taunting me, pointing out that there's nothing new, exciting or designer for me to wear in there. But when that happens, I always try to remember this; no one notices but me!

PS: Your bangs look absolutely beautiful. They suit your face so well.

  11. This is sooo true, and such a good point to bring up as a blogger...unfortunately we don't have endless amounts of money to spend on fashion, but you're right, I think that is exactly the time when you can truly call yourself stylish, when you have to mix and match and get creative. I love this skirt, and you have styled it so wonderfully in all of these looks-chic while not spending out of control=perfect!

  13. There are many questions about fashion clothing that occupy the minds of all women on this earth- what should I buy for casual and formal wear, what should I wear with skirts and/or jeans, which type of fashion clothing will suit my body type, what are the latest trends and whether to buy seasonal trendy clothes or not, what others will think if I wear a particular dress and many other such types of questions? But the issue is whether we need to think about only the fashion trends or also about the comfort level and other things such as personal preferences about fashion clothing, the types of cloths which suit us or just blindly follow the trends set up by some designers and big companies and brands?

  15. I sure hear ya! I will most likely never know what it's like to wear anything 'couture,' but to be honest, I don't think I could justify spending that kind of money on an item of clothing or a purse. It's insanity when you think about it, in my humble opinion.

I hit thrift stores, yard sales, and people sometimes pass things along to me since they've found out that I like clothes :) I wear and re-wear (and re-wear and re-work, and re-wear again!) I have no money at all for clothes right now, but I do enjoy getting creative! Keep on keepin' on, sounds like you're doing great!

I like this maxi skirt - it's really cute and looks comfy and fun to wear!

  17. Hey Lousie, don't worry- you are not alone in feeling that way! Many of us struggle with the same issues...I'd love to own designer items or stay up on every trend I love, but sometimes we all have to realize that the piggy bank can only stretch so much. I can be an impulse buyer so I've even given up my credit card (told my husband to hide it!) and leave my debit card at home to live on a cash diet. I'm trying this whole revisiting what truly great things I already have in my closet! Many of those girls who are carrying a Rebecca Minkoff purse, walking in Manolos, and wearing a DVF dress also seem to shop at H&M and Zara like the rest of us sometimes too ;)

  24. It's great you are true to yourself, Fashion is not always about who your wearing. It is not who you wear its how you wear. Consignment stores are great also beacuse they do have designer goodies at a fraction retail. Happy New year!

Dude I completely agree with you! I used to (sometimes still do!) get so jealous about certain blogs and their crazy expensive styles. Love your style, and I try to do the same, buy vintage! Make better cooler MORE stylish outfits for less! I have 3 kids so its not very real to buy 6" Louboutins, haha, teetering after a 3 year old at the park me thinks not!

  26. I totally understand that feeling. I'm 25 and in school no mortgage yet so you're my hero! but I know I'm going to be in school for a long while yet so designer items are far from my reach. But I even tweeted this the other day, I don't think being a good blogger is about having the most expensive items or regularly buying clothes, to me it's about what you can do with what you already own, which is exactly what you said here :)
ps. I looove that grey skirt I've been on the hunt for something like that to fit my tiny 5'2 frame lol
